While we're still recovering from a night of Afrobeats landing stateside at One Africa Music Fest, take a look at our photos from the night.
As she held the door for her friend, a young woman said under her breath "that was the best concert I've ever been to."
The crowds leaving the Barclays Center Friday night looked stunned after the One Africa Music Fest. On Flatbush Avenue, groups of friends seemed to float-by dressed in their best Lagos/New York/Accra/London street style style. And while the scene was rather subdued compared to the typical Brooklyn arena crowd it’s because everyone was quietly beaming.
Think of your favorite nightclub. The place you go where the music is always right, no one's holding up the wall, and you dance 'til you sweat. That was the Barclays Center on Friday night (July 22), as the One Africa Music Fest took over Brooklyn.
Make no mistake: Afrobeat music is in the midst of a global takeover. Most of the songs performed by artists Flavour, Davido, Timayo, Diamond Platnumz, Tiwa Savage and Wizkid were barely in English, yet the audience sang along to every word. While people in the crowd were proudly shouting out their African countries of origin, African-Americans like myself were just happy to twerk along. Here are a few things I learned:
Wizkid who is currently enjoying the year 2018 with hit songs and collaborations adds to his works and effort as he delivered an outstanding performance at the just concluded One Africa Music Fest.
The Starboy performed his new hit single “Fever”, group song Soco that got Ceeza Milli to join him on stage to deliver his verse. Wizkid also performed the music industry national anthem “Ojuelegba”.
What do you know about One African Music fest? What good has it done for Afrobeats?
All the media tells us is that Afrobeats is gaining traction in the international scene. Those of us who document the progress the genre is making don’t hesitate to scribble out words on how the world is getting a dose of Afrobeats and can’t seem to get enough.
Some of us, who are lucky to have firsthand knowledge of the people working in the background, know that there are certain avenues through which the Nigerian sound is being promoted. But does the general audience know exactly those who serve as the engines behind the proliferation of Afrobeats?
We can’t stop talking about the One Africa Music Fest that recently held at Barclays Center in New York.
Put together by Paul Okoye of Upfront & Personal Group, the show was an amazing success.
There were performances from several African stars including Ghanaian singer Efya, Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz, Nigerian stars Wizkid, Davido, Flavour, Tiwa Savage, Timaya, Don Jazzy, Praiz, Sound Sultan and more. There was also a performance by Jidenna.
The show was hosted by Banky W and we’ve got all the photos from the concert for you.
Check them out below!
Let’s Get Started
The African music scene was lit on Friday 16 November at the One Africa Music Festival hosted at the Madinat Jumeirah Al Sufough, Dubai.

It's safe to say that the inaugural concert brought a major party to New York City and will continue to be the talk of the town both in the United States and worldwide.
The One Africa Music Fest was a night to remember for music lovers across the world.
As the breezy humidity lurked in the New York City air Friday night (July 22), thousands of concertgoers from various parts of America and world flocked to Brooklyn's Barclays Center in their best (and afrocentric-inspired) attire to hear jams from many of The Motherland's most influential afrobeats artists.
